A fortnight after making an agonising 99, Geelong College captain Ted Bain found himself back in the nervous 90s against Carey Grammar.

However, this time he had some luck on his side – but it wasn’t without some drama.

Three runs away from the elusive milestone, Carey Grammar found the edge of Bain’s bat, only for it to fly through the slips as he and his partner Will Rodda looked to get three.

But as Rodda stumbled as they were coming back for the third run, causing Geelong College players’ stomachs to drop.

That feeling shortly became relief and celebration as Bain raised his bat for his first century in the APS competition.

The productive batter finished with 134 from 199 deliveries as Geelong College compiled 5-277, with Rodda and Harry Emerson also making half centuries.

Bain had been no stranger to falling short of a ton, having also made 91 in a practice match this season and 91 against arch rivals Geelong Grammar last campaign.

Despite that the managed to keep a clear head thanks to the tutelage from Geelong College’s coaching staff.

“The shot to bring up the 100 was an edge through slips, batting with Will Rodda he slipped on the way back for a third so that was a nervous moment for the boys who saw it,” he chuckled.

“It was pretty relieving to finally get there in the end, but I think (coach Nick Dixon) and our team really focus on the process and take away the emotion in the result.

“We speak a lot about trying to approach each ball the same way regardless of your score, so when you get near those milestones you’ve got something to fall back on.

“Playing Geelong ones is definitely a goal down the line, it was my first season there this year, and albeit interrupted it was awesome to see the training standards and way some of the top players go about it.”

It wasn’t enough for Geelong College to achieve victory away from home as a Carey Grammar captain Charlie Grummitt led his side to a win with a hundred of his own.

While he flourished himself, Bain was left disappointed by the defeat.

“The loss really hurt on the weekend, it was a pretty disappointed changeroom after the game. I think the most disappointing part of the loss, and to a degree most of the season is that we’ve been our own worst enemy,” Bain said.

“On the weekend it was probably the dropped catches and inconsistent bowling but there’s always been one part of our game holding us back. It’s tough to swallow because we know what we’ve got, we just haven’t been able to put it together yet.”

Elsewhere, Haileybury College suffered its first loss of the summer, going down to the in-form Xavier College.

Haileybury only managed 236 in reply.

Brighton Grammar recorded another strong win, defeating Geelong Grammar by 91 runs.

Brighton star Alex Turner (67) was amongst the runs again while Jem Spicer fell agonisingly three runs short of a century.

Sam Lalor was the only Geelong Grammar bat to pass 50, recording 51.

Jack Czosnek, meanwhile, led Caulfield Grammar to its win over Scotch College.

Czosnek scored 90 in Caulfield’s first-innings total of 269.

Scotch star Ed Winneke tried his best to steer his side to victory with 80 off 145 balls but ultimately fell 28 runs short.

Wesley College pulled off one of the bigger chases of the APS season when it reeled in St Kevin’s College’s 340.

Lucis Yole punished the Wesley bowlers for 168 off just 180 balls before Wesley made light work of the chase.

Kenul Edirisinghe top scored with 98 while William Goldthorp (56) and captain Rex Macalister (67no) also played hands in the big chase.

Wesley passed St Kevin’s with five wickets in hand during the 84th over.
