The VTCA has crowned its champion players for 2020-21 with Druids captain Micky Hay taking out the top gong.

Hay was awarded the Senior Division Paxino Medal after a stellar season that saw him top the competition’s run-scorers charts, edging out Strathmore’s Chis Williams by a single vote.

After finishing third in the league medal count last season, Hay took his game to a new level, scoring 516 runs at an average of 57.33.

He hit a career-high 103 not out against St Albans and also pocketed 12 wickets to ensure Druids survived relegation by the barest of margins.

The South African star was also named captain in the Senior Division Team of the Year.

Hay and Williams were the only batsmen to score more than 500 runs in the home-and-away season, while Nalin Amarathunga was the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps.

Amarathunga was one of three Sunshine United selected in the all-star XI after the club claimed its maiden Senior Division crown.

Former state and Big Bash League all-rounder Daniel Salpietro proved himself a class above in Division 1, romping away to claim the Isaacs-Howarth Medal.

The Airport West-St Christopher’s star earned 45 votes in a dominant debut season to win ahead of Altona Roosters’ Dishan Kankanamage on 32 votes.

The pair were the only players in the competition to finish in the top 10 for runs and wickets during the home-and-away season.

Salpietro topped the Division 1 run-scorers charts with 580 runs at an average of 58 and finished equal sixth with 23 wickets at 14.83.

Kankanamage knocked in the second most runs with 443 at 44.30 and 23 wickets as well but at the superior average of 9.87.

Daniel English topped the wicket-taking charts with 28 scalps and was one of two Team of the Year selections for premier Craigieburn, while Sunshine’s Troy Stone was named captain.

In Division 2, Keilor Park’s Dean Gila claimed back-to-back McNamara Medals with 31 votes, seven clear of Newport-Digman’s Tyler Johnson.

Gila scored 345 runs at an average of 34.50 during the home-and-away season to finish second in the run-scoring charts behind Sydenham Hillside’s Ishan Dombagaha (450 runs).

He also finished fourth among the competition’s top wicket-takers with 24 scalps at 14.83, with Brad Robertson (Williamstown CYMS) taking 27.

It was also back-to-back victories for Sunbury’s Jason McGann in Division 4.

However, the Roar star achieved the feat across two different divisions having claimed the Pollock Medal last season.

McGann won the Clark Medal in a tie with Moonee Valley’s Nadeera Thuppahi, both with 29 votes, while Melton Central’s Lahiru Kumara was third.

In the Women’s Division, Glenroy’s Ashley Angus claimed the league best-and-fairest ahead of joint runners-up Lily Ryan (St Andrews Pascoe Vale) and Shannon Egan (Williamstown CYMS).

Angus topped the competition’s run-scoring charts with 195 runs in five matches, including two half-centuries and three not-outs for an average of 97.50.
