A callous pet owner dumped her cat on the road outside an animal shelter, shooed it away and drove off without giving it a second glance.
The woman’s heartless actions — which were captured on CCTV — shocked staff at the Australian Animal Protection Society.
Society chief executive Megan Benton said it was the wrong way to surrender animals.
“Our staff were shocked and saddened by the blatant disregard for the wellbeing of this innocent animal,” she said.
“This is an opportunity to remind our community that there are proper channels for surrendering animals.”
Ms Benton recommends those needing to surrender pets get in contact with a shelter.
The society has a form on its website for those who may need to surrender a pet due to moving or rental issues, financial hardship or inability to care for a pet.
Surrendered pets should never be dumped at shelters.
“We are happy to report the cat is now safe and well at AAPS,” Ms Benton said
The cat has been named Poppet by the shelter.
