A man was found with a gun that had been used in a shooting in Dandenong South earlier this year a court has heard.

Shannon Gilliand appeared in the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he was slapped with a 12 month community corrections order after earlier pleading guilty to possession charges.

While Gilliand was not involved with the shooting, police found the gun used, a double barrel shotgun, in his Cranbourne West address.

During the search warrant police also found two imitation firearms and a small quantity of meth.

They also found a Suzuki motorbike which police believed to be stolen.

When police pulled the car over in Pakenham they also found GHB and meth in the car.

Gilliand served 108 days pre sentence detention and Magistrate Christina Windisch agreed to have him assessed for a community corrections order.

The court heard the 39-year-old slipped into a period of offending when his marriage broke down and he struggled to engage in a co-parenting relationship.

The court also heard Gilliand was involved in umpiring games for his son’s footy club and was a dedicated father.

The concreter was told by Ms Windisch that the mix of guns and drugs can have “disastrous consequences”.

“People with not such good intentions can get their hands on them and then we have not very good outcomes,” she said.

Gilliand was found suitable for a community corrections order and was placed on one for 12 months.

His 110 days spent in pre sentence detention also went towards his sentence.

A conviction was recorded.
