A Fountain Gate worker was bashed in the centre’s carpark as he waited for a bus ride home, a court has heard.
Dandenong’s Shok Adutmou, 22, was jailed for one year and six months in the County Court on December 9 over the disgusting attack which left his victim bloodied and bruised.
The court heard the 21-year-old employee was waiting for a bus in the centre’s carpark after finishing work when he was approached by Adutmou, then 21, about 9pm on July 12
The County Court heard Adutmou, who was high on Xanax and ice, sat next to the worker and asked him how his day was before demanding his mobile phone.
“You moved closer to him and with your left hand produced a blue handle box cutter knife … you said, ‘hand it over’,” Judge Kevin Doyle said.
The victim tried to run but Adutmou grabbed his jacket sleeve, pulling him close before laying up to seven punches to his face, nose and shoulders.
The victim screamed for help before managing to kick Adutmou in the face and running back to work where he raised the alarm.
Police found Adutmou about 300m from the bus stop about half an hour later.
Adutmou’s pockets were full of the victim’s personal cards which were left at the scene.
The court heard Adutmou developed an acquired brain injury following a serious car accident in which he was a passenger in 2016 and was expelled from Lyndale Secondary College in Year 11.
He began abusing cannabis at the age of 17 but moved onto ecstasy, GHB, cocaine and ice.
Adutmou failed his building and construction course due to previous offending, the court heard.
“Your victim was a young man, the same age as you, alone and vulnerable, waiting for a bus in the dark,” Mr Doyle said.
“He should have been safe but he wasn’t, because you randomly selected him as a target.”
Adutmou was sentenced to one year and six months’ prison with a non-parole period of nine months.
