Two young people arrested after stealing vehicle, threatening victim with weapons

Two youth allegedly threatened a man with edged weapons after stealing his vehicle at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s southeast.

A 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy have been arrested after they allegedly crashed a maintenance vehicle and threatened the victim with weapons in Cheltenham on Friday morning.

Investigators have been told the victim was doing garden maintenance near a shopping centre car park on Nepean Highway when he saw the pair allegedly approaching his vehicle.

The girl then allegedly got into the vehicle, which had the engine running, and attempted to drive away.

She only made it a short distance before allegedly crashing into a shopping trolley bay, causing damage.

The victim approached the pair and they allegedly produced edged weapons before threatening him.

Nearby protective services officers saw the incident occurring and ran to assist.

They disarmed and arrested the 14-year-old girl, while the 12-year-old boy fled the scene on foot.

He was found and arrested a short time later.

The youths are now assisting police with their inquiries.
