Two families have been forced to flee their homes after an early morning housefire in Oakleigh South.

Emergency services were called to a Taunton Ave property at 3.25am where they found

smoke billowing from a single-storey weatherboard home.

An FRV spokesperson said the blaze started on the veranda, before spreading to the remainder of the home, a neighbouring property and a nearby golf course.

Eight crews worked to control the blaze, where they were able to save 80 per cent of the neighbouring property.

All residents were safely evacuated without injury.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
