Police say two men were caught on CCTV bashing a third man outside a Traralgon shopping centre as witnesses begged them to stop.

CCTV released of brutal Traralgon attack

Shocking CCTV has emerged of a man being publicly attacked outside a shopping centre in the Gippsland region, after claims he “touched” the girlfriend of one of the attackers.

The incident, captured on security camera, occurred in front of horrified witnesses outside a shopping centre entry on Franklin St in Traralgon about 12.20pm on Wednesday.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said investigators had been told the attack happened “without warning” while the 55-year-old man was sitting on a bench.

“The man who attacked the victim yelled at him and accused him of touching his girlfriend,” she said.

“The physical assault continued out onto the road of the carpark as the victim tried to defend himself.”

The spokeswoman said the assault was initiated by one man, wearing a grey windcheater and track pants, who walked up to the victim and struck him to the head.

A co-offender, wearing a black jacket and white cap, then punched the man who fell to the ground.

Police say the “main offender” then tried to stomp on the victim’s head, while passing shoppers pleaded with them to stop.

The spokeswoman said the victim was rushed to hospital but it is believed he wasn’t seriously injured.

“Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward,” she said.

“They are also appealing for anyone with information about the identity of the men involved to call Crime Stoppers.”

It’s believed a third man, known to the attackers, filmed the assault on his smartphone.
