THE Peninsula is set for a ‘grey boom’ with four major retirement villages in the pipeline.

Developer Steller said the proposed $430 million investment would generate up to 2800 casual and permanent jobs.

The retirement villages — slated for Rosebud, Mornington, Bittern and Hastings — will deliver about 1300 new homes and 500 aged care beds. Steller chief executive Simon Pitard said the developments were being driven by Australia’s ageing population.

“Steller Estates will provide Peninsula residents with an opportunity to downsize to a new home that is secure and easy to maintain,” he said.

Mr Pitard said Steller offered residents a “holistic approach to retirement with the option to be supported as their needs changed, through subsidised home care, on-site allied health, support services and on-site aged care”.

He said the company was committed to community engagement.

“We have a genuine interest in working with our neighbours to ensure that Steller Estates will enhance the character and amenity that make the Peninsula such a dynamic and sought-after place to live,” Mr Pitard said.

Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders veteran member Jeanette Lane said the region’s relaxed vibe and proximity to the coast made it appealing to seniors.

“It’s very peaceful and there’s everything you could want — there’s no doubt about it,” Ms Lane said.

Ms Lane said the Peninsula’s hinterland with its wineries and restaurants also attracted seniors.

She said seniors were won over by retirement villages because they felt safe and provided a range of amenities and activities.

Steller expects to lodge plans with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council early next year.
