An enraged and jealous ex-boyfriend who ran over his former partner’s new lover has been jailed for four years.

Ryan Taylor, 19, was motivated by “jealously, insecurity and anger” when he drove around the streets of Cranbourne looking for his ex-girlfriend and her partner on February 12, 2018.

He spotted the pair crossing a road only 200 metres from Cranbourne Park Primary School when his rage went into overdrive.

Taylor yelled at the new boyfriend, revved his engine, crossed over to the wrong side of the street and cannoned into his defenceless victim.

The impact threw the man onto the bonnet and then two metres into the air.

He spent the next three days in hospital after a “golf ball” sized haematoma was found on his head.

He also suffered a range of injuries including neck and spine fractures.

What happens in a criminal trial?

Witnesses said Taylor narrowly avoided hitting a woman — believed to be a parent walking to the school — as he sped from the scene.

Taylor, who was on bail at the time and didn’t hold a license, handed himself into police several hours later.

The youth had previously been involved with drugs.

The court heard how he had “gone off the rails” as a 15-year-old when he began using ice, cocaine and GHB.

County Court Judge Frances Hogan said he understood Taylor’s “jealously” and “confusion” about his relationship with his ex-girlfriend but denounced his crime.

“It could in no way excuse your appallingly violent act of using a car as a weapon to seriously injure (your victim),” he said.

Taylor had been using drugs such as ice since he was 15.

“To use a car to intentionally injure someone is a most brutal form of assault.

“To have driven off without rendering assistance, is extraordinarily callous behaviour.

“Moreover, there is evidence that this appalling act of driving was committed by you at a point some 200 metres prior to when you would have passed a primary school at 3.30pm.

“This was a time when parents and children would be in the area for the end of the school day.”

Taylor was sentenced in the County Court on March 1 to four years in a youth detention centre.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of intentionally causing serious injury and failing to stop and render assistance after a motor vehicle accident.
