THE hottest hangout in Hampton Park is not a trendy nightclub or bar; it’s a cafe.
Sugar Buns Bakery Cafe at the Hampton Park shopping centre has become so popular for its decadent, Instagram-able mega-milkshakes that it often has people lining up around the block.
Owner Steven Richard, from Preston, said there were sometimes as many as 300 people queuing for the milkshakes and he had even scaled back on social media marketing.
Sugar Buns started making the milkshakes five months ago and includes local produce to make the sauces, reductions and coulis.
People come from all across Melbourne to get a photo; Mr Richard even ran into one of his neighbours there.
“It’s always full, what we’ve done now with the queues out the door we have put bollards out the front ... it’s like a nightclub,” he said.
“(Before that) we were blocking the $2 shop entrance as well.
“We do 600 to 700 milkshakes per day. People come here and take a photo with a milkshake and then have a sip or drink half of it. Some people cannot digest it or it’s too sweet for them.
“The Candyland shake is popular. Also the salted caramel, because who doesn’t like salted caramel popcorn?”
Mr Richard said he had been in hospitality since he was 17, first opening a place in Pakenham.
Mr Richard said the cafe was being renovated to accommodate 170 patrons in up and downstairs areas and an open kitchen. He said he spent 90 hours a week at Sugar Buns.
And hospitality is a family affair; his mother runs nearby Lucy’s Divine Cakes and his brother runs Heroes Burger Diner.
“I love what I do, I do 90 hours and it feels like 10, I do not do this for money, I love every single second of it,” he said.
The milkshakes are $5 for baby size, $12 for mini and $16 for the mega shake.
