Springvale drug addict who carjacked, bashed UberEats driver found hiding in public toilet

A Springvale junkie with a 42-page rap sheet had not long been out of jail when he embarked on another crime spree, this time carjacking a student working part-time as a UberEats driver.

Svetan Garevski, who bashed and carjacked an UberEats driver, was found hiding in a public toilet.

A heroin-addicted thief wanted for bashing and carjacking an UberEats driver has been jailed for two years after he was found hiding in a public toilet.

Svetan Garevski and his brother stole the delivery driver’s vehicle as he walked up a driveway to drop off food to a hungry customer.

When the 22-year-old student driver realised what was happening and tried to stop the car theft, Garevski viciously attacked him.

He also broke in to several cars, nicked wallets and phones, and bought cigarettes and pizzas with stolen bank cards in a four-month crime spree.

The 28-year-old from Springvale, who has 42 pages of prior criminal convictions, pleaded guilty to 33 theft, assault and other charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard on May 17 this year the Uber deliverer was ambushed by Garevski and his brother.

He tried to fight them off before Garevski kicked and punched him and the siblings got in the car and drove away.

They also stole the Uber guy’s phone and bank cards.

A couple of days later the car was found abandoned and the brother arrested, but Garevski could not be located.

On May 24 he was found by police hiding in a Springvale public toilet and remanded in custody.

He had also stolen bank cards from a car in Springvale in February, took cash and phones from a tradie’s ute in Springvale in March, broke into a Noble Park car in April and raided another vehicle in Springvale in April.

Garevski’s defence lawyer said his client had PTSD from a traumatic childhood, had a heroin addiction and was also mentally affected by a serious stabbing incident in a park in 2018.

He said he was not as involved in the UberEats carjacking as his brother, who had initiated the car theft.

But magistrate Tony Burns didn’t believe Garevski had not planned the crime.

“He just happened to be riding his bike past when his brother was there carjacking a victim?” Mr Burns said.

“I don’t accept his role is any less culpable.”

Garevski was jailed for two years with a non-parole period of 12 months, minus 65 days he has already served on remand.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years.

His brother had already been jailed for 12 months with a non-parole period of six months for his role in the carjacking.
