A top Australian jiu-jitsu champion who faced court after serving a ban for drug-driving has vowed never to smoke cannabis again.

Nikki Lloyd-Griffiths is ranked number 19 in the world in her category and has won medals at state, national and international level.

The 29-year-old athlete from Murrumbeena faced Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on Monday to apply to be able to get back behind the wheel.

The court heard she had lost her licence for two driving crimes committed in 2018.

Lloyd-Griffiths had failed a roadside drug test for cannabis in September 2018 and was caught driving at a dangerous speed in October 2018.

She faced Ringwood Magistrates’ court in July last year when she was given a total of 12 months off the road.

She said she used to use cannabis daily but had “not touched it” since January 4 last year and wouldn’t be doing so again.

“I was smoking it every day,” she said.

“Since January 4 last year I stopped myself, I stopped hanging round with people who did that.”

She said she had completed the drug education program and knows if she commits any more drug or driving offences that may affect her ability to be able to fight overseas.

“That lifestyle was affecting my future and my work and training at the gym,” she said.

“I travel to America a lot, it could mean I couldn’t pursue my dreams to compete.”

Lloyd-Griffiths mentors and trains at Immersion MMA in Glen Waverley, but is presently unemployed due to the coronavirus pandemic shutdown of gyms.

Magistrate Victoria Campbell granted her licence reinstatement application, saying it was appropriate given the measures she had taken since her drug-driving fail.
