West Gippsland cricket: Lucas Brown takes a bag of wickets in memorable family affair

Lucas Brown had one of those dream days on the cricket field when he lined up alongside his dad and grandfather in Devon Meadows’ F-Grade team.

When the rare chance to play in the same cricket side as your dad and grandfather comes along, you want to make it count.

And 11-year-old Devon Meadows cricketer Lucas Brown did just that, capturing 5-10 off four overs, to seal a memorable victory for the Panthers’ F-Grade side in the West Gippsland Cricket Association last weekend.

Lucas’ dad Anthony Brown and his grandad Kevin Plumb watched on in awe as the young paceman cut a swathe through the Cardinia batting line-up.

He nabbed the last five wickets as Cardinia, chasing 164, crashed from 5-107 to all out for 136.

“He just put the ball in the right spots every time and he snagged five for,” Anthony said.

The opportunity to play together came up because Devon Meadows was short of players.

It has been a while since Kevin had played but he donned the whites — and he’s glad he did.

It was Lucas’ day. And, as Anthony revealed, he had added motivation to snare his first “five-fa”.

“He had three-for and they were eight wickets down,” Anthony said.

“I said to him, ‘if you get a five-for I’ll give you a hundred bucks’.

“And he took the next two.”

Lucas’ mum Stacey heard about the added incentive after the game.

“I didn’t know about the bet and when he got in the car the first thing he said was, ‘so Dad, when do I get my hundred bucks?’,’’ she laughed.
