MPCA: Somerville century sinks Seaford Tigers

A Somerville star made a brilliant century, while a former Sydney Swans footballer who played with Warwick Capper made a shock appearance in a Provincial match.

He’d scored a double ton in the twos, but never a century in First XI.

Brenton Alp got the monkey off his back in stunning fashion on Saturday, making 113 not out to steer Somerville to a rousing win over Seaford Tigers in MPCA Peninsula.

Chasing 7-225 at Belvedere Reserve, Somerville motored to the target in only 34 overs and with the loss of only one wicket, making 1-226.

Alp and Craig Black (56 off 37 balls, with 10 fours) put on 98 in a flash before Leigh Lowry (46no off 72, with 5 fours) joined Alp for an unbroken 128-run partnership.

Alp’s 113 came off 102 balls and included 15 boundaries, highlighted by exquisite timing.

He’s having his best-ever season, with 499 runs, at 55.44.

Alp made an unbeaten 201 in Somerville’s seconds in 2014-15.

And Somerville, on a four-game tear, is in third spot, a game clear of fourth with two rounds to go.

Pines opener Damien Lawrence scored his seventh half-century of the summer to help the Piners to victory over Flinders.

The powerful left-hander made 55 (7 fours, 1 six) as Pines, 3-138 off 30.3 overs, chased down Flinders’ 135. Ash Hupe hit 36 not out.

Lawrence has scored 524 runs this season, at 58.22.

Mornington climbed to fourth spot after a 13-run win over Rosebud. Shane Hockey (54) and Charlie Parker (53) set up the win with a 106-run partnership for the second wicket.

Hockey capped a great game with 4-23.

Moorooduc’s finals hopes took a hit when it was dismissed for 146 chasing Heatherhill’s 8-173.

Jake Williams top scored for the Hills with 40 and Jake Theobald took 4-28 for the winners.

In Provincial, a 57-year-old former AFL player made a surprise appearance in Langwarrin’s side against Baxter.

Rob Prosser, who played for the Sydney Swans alongside Warwick Capper in 1985, is the father of Langy coach Matt Prosser and acts as the side’s team manager.

He was called on to play only his second First XI game when Langwarrin’s Cameron Sharpe hurt himself in the pre-game warm-up.

While Rob wasn’t called on to bat or bowl, he relished the contest as Langwarrin squeaked home with nine balls to go, making 7-131 in reply to Baxter’s 130.

Rob’s youngest son Sam was man of the match after taking a career-best 4-12 and making a defiant 20 at the top of the list. Matt Prosser top scored for Langwarrin with 47 and has made 201 runs in his past three knocks.

Baxter paceman Chamika Sattambi almost dragged his side to victory, taking 4-24.

Mt Eliza snapped a six-game losing streak with a thrilling run chase win over Red Hill.

Rashmika Opatha cracked 60 at the top of the list and Nick Strickland (20) and Damien Kent (12) made vital runs as the Mounties passed Red Hill’s 5-154 in the final over, making 9-158.

Earlier, Red Hill champ Simon Dart made 53 not out and Brent Martin 52 not out.

The win keeps alive Mt Eliza’s faint hopes of avoiding relegation.

Old Peninsula paceman James La Brooy grabbed 4-41 to help the Pirates topple ladder leaders Baden Powell by 13 runs.

The Pirates put up 6-204, with Justin Grant (40) and Wade Pelzer (34) in the runs, and then held the Braves to 9-191.

BP champion Rhys Elmi made 39 to take his season tally to 491, at 70.14.

Sorrento secured a finals berth with a 25-run win over Long Island.

In District, Carrum Downs gun Gordon Waterfall made 94 off 114 balls as the Cougars beat Crib Point to climb to second spot.

Waterfall has churned out 386 runs this summer, at 38.60.

He shared a 65-run opening stand with Brad Lockhart (34) and an 82-run second wicket union with Rob Johnston (40) as Carrum Downs put up 4-208 off 40 overs.

Nathan Harford chimed in with 26no off 22 balls at the end.

Crib Point could only manage 5-137 in reply, with Shane Smith (1-9), Waterfall (1-17) and Johnston (2-21) bowling tightly.

Ladder leader Dromana defeated fourth-placed Carrum after producing a splendid run chase.

Jye Voelkl grabbed 5-37 as Dromana dismissed Carrum for 171.

In reply, Dromana got home with a few overs to spare, making 5-172. Kierran Voelkl (45) laid the foundations before Jack Fowler (24) and Ben Brittain (34no) finished the job.

Daniel Polson played his second game of the season for Carrum.
