MPCA 2018-19: Mornington beats Baxter while Sorrento and Langwarrin claim outright wins

Mornington’s fast bowlers ripped through the Baxter batting line-up to secure a commanding win in MPCA Provincial on Saturday.

Mornington’s fast bowlers ripped through the Baxter batting line-up to secure a commanding win in MPCA Provincial on Saturday.

Michael Heib took a season-best 5-33 and Glenn Wood (2-15) removed Baxter stars Daniel Warwick (17) and Chris Brittain (3) as the Bulldogs shot out Baxter for 104, in reply to 352. Rueben Higgins (2-11 off 8.2 overs) also bowled well.

Forced to follow-on, Baxter was 1-37.

Mornington is up to third spot with two rounds remaining, while Baxter has dropped to fifth.

Sorrento climbed to second after an eye-popping outright victory over Mt Eliza at Madsen Reserve.

The game was in the balance when play resumed on Saturday, with Sorrento on 5-59 chasing 118.

But the Sharks dominated proceedings, Leigh Poholke smashing 66 and Tom Clarke (20no) providing solid support as the visitors achieved first innings points and then accelerated to 6-148 declared — with a lead of 30.

Mt Eliza’s day went from bad to worse when it was skittled for 89 in 41.2 overs, with Sorrento speedster Jake Wood grabbing 6-35 off 18 overs of hostile aggression. He finished with match figures of 9-74.

Sorrento then cracked 1-60 off 14.4 overs — Jedd Falck making 27no — to secure maximum points.

Langwarrin also had an outright victory, thrashing Pearcedale at Lloyd Park. After routing the Panthers for 79 last week, Langy resumed on 4-100 and rushed to 7-179 before declaring (with a lead of 100). Tom Hussey took his overnight score from 35 to 49, while Mal Coutts made 25 and Matt Prosser 22no. Pearcedale skipper Kaine Smith tried hard, taking 5-78.

Put back in, Pearcedale slumped to 4-11 and, despite the efforts of Jake Roberts (38) and Smith (31), was dismissed for 106 as Trav Campbell (2-19), Leigh Paterson (2-13), Jake Prosser (2-23) and Coutts (2-7) struck. Langy made 0-9 off two overs to bank maximum points.

Adam Gailitis took 3-20 off 20 overs to help Peninsula Old Boys to a 63-run win over Flinders, which was all out for 126 chasing 189. James La Brooy (2-30) grabbed the first two wickets as the Pirates took charge. Flinders skipper Neil Barfuss was the only Sharks batsman who offered any resistance, making 66.

In Sub-District, Andy Kitson (4-51) and Stuart Plunkett (3-57) bowled Frankston YCW to victory over Tootgarook, which was dismissed for 236 in reply to 250. Travis French (58) and Todd Harnett (53) did best for the Frogs.

The Edwards brothers batted Tyabb to an impressive win over Balnarring. Michael Edwards made 52 and younger brother Aaron 48 as the Yabbies made 5-186 in reply to 184. Nick Taranto (37) was again in the runs.

After Kierran Voelkl struck a superb century last week, younger brother Jye Voelkl captured 5-35 off 19 overs to seal victory for Dromana (236) over Boneo (126) in the top-of-the-table clash.

Carrum Downs made it three wins in a row when it beat Rye (131) after making 8-164 (dec). Ryan Lynch (3-15), Michael Flahive (2-19) and Shane Smith (2-37).

In Peninsula, ladder leader Baden Powell made it seven wins on the spin — but suffered a key injury blow in the process.

Skipper Craig Entwistle hurt his hip while batting and had to retire hurt on 37 as the Braves cruised past Crib Point’s 119 with the loss of only four wickets, finishing 6-170. BP opener Mitchell Barr impressed, making 42 off 73 balls, and Rhys Elmi made 27.

A superb innings from former Victorian batsman Simon Dart guided Red Hill to a four-wicket win over Pines. Dart made 85 not out off 176 balls, with 6 fours, as Red Hill made 6-235 in 77 overs, in reply to 233. Hillman opener Riley Shaw laid the foundations with 52 off 138 balls and No 3 Luke Robertson made 38. Later, Nick Esipoff cracked a run-a ball 24. It was a costly loss for Pines, which dropped out of the four.

Moorooduc climbed to fourth spot after a gripping one-wicket win over Somerville in a one-day game. Ducs spinner Rashimal Mendis took 4-38 — and celebrated each wicket extravagantly — to help restrict Somey to 9-168 off 40. In reply, Moorooduc got the runs with an over to spare, finishing 9-171. Mendis capped a man-of-the-match display with a sizzling 52 (6 fours, 3 sixes) and debutant Grady Vickers, against his former club, scored a vital 33 at No 6.

Long Island has catapulted to third spot after a stunning outright victory over Main Ridge. Jake Middleton took eight wickets for the game as the Islanders shot out Main Ridge for 80 and 115 before Aaron Paxton (47no) and Kyle O’Reilly (28no) clipped 0-79 off 22 in the second innings.

In District, Rosebud took a step closer to finals action with an impressive win over Seaford.

Ash Nagel (4-15), Leon Davis (3-33) and Brian Doughty (3-43) combined for the Sharks to dismiss Seaford for 137, in reply to 213. Ash Sayers top scored for Seaford with 31.

Carrum skipper Jake D’Atri spun his side to victory over Mt Martha, taking 5-54 off 30 overs, with 15 maidens, as the Lions dismissed the Reds for 131, in reply to 182. Corey Hand also did well, taking 3-13, while Kyle Bendle top-scored for Mt Martha with 37.

Wielding an ex-Darcy Short Icon bat, Ricky Ramsdale smashed 76 to propel Delacombe Park (7-210 off 61.2) to victory over Hastings (209). Joel Malcolm anchored the chase with a fine 50 not out.

Seaford Tigers took a big scalp, upsetting ladder leaders Heatherhill. Former Cranbourne opener Brayden Roscoe batted beautifully to make 84, with sterling support from Matt Roach (38), Luke Chevalier (25no) and man-of-the-match Jye Thornell (28no).
