The best performance in local cricket on the weekend?

Scour the scores across all competitions and it’s doubtful any player had a day like Heinz Southern District all-rounder Triyan De Silva.

The 21-year-old former Premier player lit up the semi-final against Cranbourne in Turf 2 of the Dandenong District Cricket Association on Saturday, taking five wickets and then cracking an unbeaten century.

It brought an upset win for his team over the runaway minor premier.

The left-arm paceman collected 5-35 off seven overs in Cranny’s innings of 184.

HSD slumped to 4-30 in the run chase at Casey Fields.

But De Silva, a former Victorian under-age squad member, and Kevin Seth (58 not out) lifted their team from 4-30 to 4-187 and into the grand final.

De Silva’s 106 not out came off only 88 balls and was studded with 13 fours.

“Probably a lucky day for me, I think,’’ he was saying this morning.

“It was a big upset for us. They were clearly the best team in the comp and obviously the clear favourites to win it.

“We thought 180 wasn’t an enormous score. Even when we were 3-30 or whatever Kev and I pretty much said that as long as we were there at the end we were either going to win it or be in a really good position to win it.’’

He said the Cranbourne players were quick to congratulate him after the match.

Seth, who started the season at Premier club Prahran, and De Silva played a lot of junior cricket together.

De Silva joined HSD this season from Premier club Dandenong, where he was regarded as a good prospect and played some First XI cricket in 2019-20.

He left Dandy to focus on his job as an electrician.

“I started work as an apprentice sparkie and work became more of a priority, I guess,’’ he said.

“I couldn’t really commit to Tuesday and Thursday night training and it sort of affected my selection.

“So I just thought instead of half-arsing it maybe step down a level and give work a good crack and then once work is a bit more flexible go back to Premier Cricket eventually.’’

De Silva played junior cricket at Rowville before linking with Richmond. He crossed to Dandenong in 2019-20 (his younger brother Trishane brother is with the Panthers).

Going into the grand final against Parkmore Pirates this Saturday, De Silva has 434 runs and 23 wickets.
