Vibrant Dandenong Market is now attracting more than 100,000 shoppers a week. Here’s why patronage is going through the roof.

It’s boom time at the Dandenong Market.
Patronage at the market has soared following a $26 million refurbishment by Greater Dandenong Council.
Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said annual patronage had grown to 5.6 million — up from 5 million just five years ago.

“We have worked very hard to get the mix right,” she said.
“We have focused on expanding the fresh food and street food,” she said.
Ms Hibbs said the vibrant market was attracting more than 100,000 people over the four days it operated each week.
She said moves to expand the market to Sundays had also led to the swelling number of visitors.
Julie Busch, who chairs the council subsidiary that oversees the market, said the market was a great reflection of Dandenong’s multicultural society.
“We have 156 different nationalities working in harmony under one roof,” she said.
The market will host a ‘World Fair’ event with an emphasis on multicultural food on March 24.
