An elderly carjacking victim says he is unable to sleep after two men attacked him in a supermarket carpark in Melbourne’s south. Police have released CCTV and a facefit of a suspect they believe is involved.

Cops search for two men following alleged Hampton carjacking

A 71-year-old man is unable to sleep and feels vulnerable after a brazen daylight carjacking.

Maurice, who did not want his surname published, says he is losing sleep after the shocking incident, in which he was attacked by two men in a Coles car park in Hampton on Sunday.

He had just finished buying groceries for a dinner with his grandchildren and was sitting in his Mercedes-Benz coupe at 4.20pm when the men, believed to be of Pacific Islander appearance, struck.

One opened the driver’s side of the vehicle and pulled Maurice out of the car by his arm, while the other climbed into the passenger seat.

When the car would not start, one of the men jumped out of the car and raised his fist to Maurice’s face, demanding the remote control key.

“After they pushed me out, they realised they couldn’t drive the car without my remote control,” Maurice said.

“One man said, give me the f---ing keys, or we’ll hurt you.”

Maurice handed the key to the thugs, who were last seen driving north on Bluff Rd towards South Rd.

Coles staff rushed to help Maurice after the car sped off.

Police say the luxury car was involved in a minor collision at the intersection of Dingley Bypass and Kingston Rd, causing $20,000 worth of damage, less than 20 minutes after the attack.

The car did not stop and was later found dumped at Mack Crescent, Clarinda, just before 5pm.

Detective Senior-Constable Joshua Gimson said he believed the pair had waited in the carpark for up to an hour before they found a “soft target”.

“It’s disgusting … they saw a nice car and a soft target” he said. “We need to get people off the streets who are happy to do this kind of brazen thing to a 71-year-old man on a Tuesday afternoon.”

Maurice said the attack had affected his mental health more than his physical health.

He said he did not want his car back, but for the thieves to be off the streets.

“It’s pretty low, I’m a law abiding 71-year-old man. It’s made me feel very vulnerable” he said.

“I’m usually a good sleeper but I play it in my mind all the time. If I got the car back it would bring the memories back.”

Detectives released a computer generated image along with CCTV and images of the men. Both have medium builds and are believed to be aged in their 20s.

One was wearing a grey top with black trackpants with white stripes on the side.

He was carrying a black bag, black hat and wearing white shoes.

The other wore black pants, grey T-shirt with a black vest and black hat.
