An elderly man and six others have fled a burning home after a garage went up in flames in a suspicious house fire at Oakleigh East.

Emergency services were called to Sunshine St around 4.15am on Wednesday after reports that a residential garage was on fire.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said firefighters arrived to find the rear of the two-storey home well alight with seven people safely evacuated to the front of the property.

It’s believed some of the occupants of the home were elderly.

A 93-year-old man was taken to Monash Hospital in a stable condition for observation.

The blaze caused moderate damage to the garage but was bought under control within five minutes.

Police investigations remain ongoing with the cause of the fire deemed suspicious.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
