A CARING copper saved a joey after its mum was hit by a car on the Mornington Peninsula and had to be put down.
A local called police on Sunday morning after finding the injured roo on Old Cape Schanck Rd with a broken leg and other injuries after being struck by a car that didn’t stop.
The roo couldn’t be save, but quick-thinking Rosebud Acting Sergeant Steve Drew checked the mum’s pouch and found the little fella alive and well inside.
“I could see it protruding from the pouch,” he said.
“We regularly check kangaroo’s pouches when we’re called out to these jobs, but this was my first rescue.”

He said the local who first spotted the kangaroo gave them an old blanket to wrap the joey in while they took it back the police station.
Acting Sergeant Julia Starkey cared for the joey for a couple of hours before it was collected by a Wildlife Victoria volunteer to be rehomed.
They named the joey ‘Drewy’ in honour of the Rosebud Sergeant.
They baby roo is said to be recovering well.
Police urged motorists who hit kangaroos not to drive off and leave them for dead on the side of the road as they may be leaving a joey to die an unpleasant and painful death.
Injured wildlife should be reported to Wildlife Australia on 1300 094 535, a local police station or 000.
