What happens in a criminal trial?

BOXER Kane Watts — who once fought Danny Green — has been hit with a fine after he smashed his truck into a stationary sedan in Cheltenham.

But the part-time professional pugilist gets to keep his driving licence, as he needs it for work and to travel long distances to the gym.

The Langwarrin cruiserweight, labelled a “gritty brawler”, lost a bout with Green on points in 2016.

The 36-year-old has a pretty good record having won 19 of his 22 fights, a dozen of them by knockout.

He threw the towel in for his legal battle yesterday, pleading guilty to careless driving at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard the plumber was driving his truck along Nepean Highway in Cheltenham on January 13 this year.

He had failed to realise until too late that traffic in front had stopped for a red light.

Due to the falling rain and the damp conditions he couldn’t stop in time and skidded into the other vehicle.

He rammed the rear of the sedan, pushing it more than 10m forward into the intersection.

When police attended he told them he hadn’t been careless but couldn’t stop because the road was so wet.

The victim was taken to Sandringham Hospital after suffering slight injuries in the smash, while Watts was unhurt.

In court his defence lawyer said he was remorseful, and needed his licence as his partner had a baby on the way and he has another very young child at home.

He was also required to drive for his plumbing job and trained at a gym in Roxburgh Park — a fair distance from his Langwarrin location — which was difficult to get to by public transport.

Watts had wanted to be considered for a diversion, but his traffic priors, including a previous suspended driving offence, knocked that out.

He was fined $500, with no licence suspension imposed.
