An estimated 4000 people have flocked to Portsea for one of the Mornington Peninsula's most popular summer events, the Portsea Swim Classic.
Now in its 37th year, the event draws a wide range of participants including industry leaders, well-known sporting stars and personalities and Victoria’s leading ocean and pool swimmers.
On Friday, more than 1000 people took part in the Bay to Surf walk and run, beginning at Point Nepean National Park and finishing at Portsea Surf Life Saving Club.
Races included a 4.5km walk and run, and a 9km run.
Saturday’s swimming classic drew 3000 competitors and included three races all finishing at the Point Nepean Quarantine Station; a 500m event for teams and juniors, the gold 2.5km swim, and the 1.5km swim in seven categories.
The youngest swimmer taking part in the was 12 years old, while the eldest was 89-year-old Pat Galvin.
Robbe Dilissen stormed home to win the men’s division ahead of Jordan Merrilees and Harry Atkins, while Portsea surf life saver Dom Hart was first female home, impressively after finishing third in the 2.5km event an hour earlier.
Exchange student Imara-Bella Thorpe, from Kenya, claimed second with Steph Hunter third.
“The conditions were great out there, the tide really helped to push me along,” Hart said after her win.
“It’s a such great event to take part in every year.”
The event is a major fundraiser for the Portsea Life saving club, will all proceeds going into supporting its volunteer capabilities for training, lifesaver development and vital equipment.
