A CALLOUS canine owner who let his pregnant poodle suffer with a broken leg — which then had to be cut off — has been banned from having dogs for two years.

The Cranbourne West man didn’t get the toy poodle’s fractured front leg fixed for two months because he said he had no money, yet pocketed the cash from the poor pooch’s puppies.

After a vet tip-off the RSPCA intervened and the four-year-old had to have its limb amputated, likely due to the long delay in getting surgery.

Denis Jarome Orange pleaded guilty to two ‘failing to provide treatment’ charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

RSPCA prosecutor Daniel Bode told the court Orange took the dog to a Carrum Downs vet on December 12 last year, saying the fracture had occurred five weeks ago.

He was ordered to go and take his the injured animal immediately to a specialist for treatment.

A month later when the vet followed up with him, he still hadn’t got the surgery done, and the RSPCA were notified.

They took the dog to a specialist Casey vet and it had to have its front right leg removed.

The vet said the deformity would have been obvious, and it was evident it would have been in unnecessary pain.

Orange surrendered the dog to an RSPCA pound on January 20, and she is now in their foster care program.

The 41-year-old defended himself in court, saying money was tight at the time due to his overseas mother in laws’ illness and a busy working life as a courier.

Orange said he was not sure when the dog broke her leg, and thought surgery might affect the puppies.

He said it was stressful and financially-difficult time, was sorry and had “learned his lesson”.

Magistrate Julian Ayres said he accepted he had other issues in his life at the time, but his actions were neglectful.

“You should have heeded the vet’s advice immediately … but that didn’t happen,” Mr Ayres said.

“Thankfully the consequences weren’t fatal, but she ultimately lost a leg.”

Orange was banned from having custody of any dog for two years, placed on a one-year good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $500 to the court fund.

He must also reimburse $313 in vet fees to the RSPCA.
