A pair of dumb crooks began their ill-fated burglary attempt by spraying the property’s security camera with spray oil.
As the liquid slid off the lens, the two men went about their break-in unwittingly in full view of the camera.
Cardinia investigators allege two men entered the Mary St property in Emerald about 12.45pm on December 9, and one used a water-displacing spray (a multipurpose oil blend lubricant) in a bid to blur the security camera.
The men then allegedly used bolt cutters to smash window panels before gaining access to the garage. That set off a security alarm and the would-be thieves fled.
Police said the pair drove away in a white Holden Rodeo that had false plates.
No one was home at the time of the incident.
Detectives have released images of a car and two men they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.
One man is perceived as being of caucasian appearance, aged 35 to 45 years old, with grey hair and a small tattoo on his left outer forearm.
He was wearing a blue Asics top with a white emblem on the front, a black cap, black pants and sneakers.
The other man has an olive complexion, aged 45 to 50 years old, unshaven and has short dark hair.
