Patties at 100 paces as Frankston eateries battle for burger crown

Weird and wacky creations are hitting grills across Frankston as eateries gear up for a challenge to find the best burgers in town — and not all are typical meat and veg varieties. Here’s how you can help decide the winner.

The ultimate burger bragging rights are up for grabs in Frankson.

Cafes and restaurants across the city are preparing to pit their patties against each other in the first ever Burger Off challenge.

The Frankston Council initiative invites eateries to create a special burger for every day in August with customers encouraged to rate the results on a special app.

At the end of the month the creation with the most votes will be crowned the region’s ultimate burger champion.

Frankston Mayor Michael O’Reilly said he was stoked to see the inaugural Burger Off launched with so many local businesses busting to take part.

“Who will have the best burger in Frankston City? Your vote decides,” he said.

Some of the entries already created include Gelato Unou’s unique take on the fast-food favourite, which uses ice cream instead of meat or veggie patties.

Other eateries have jumped on board early, releasing a new burger every day in the lead-up to the challenge.

Creations include Combat Cafe’s ‘Combat Burger’ which features a pork and beef meat patty with bacon, lettuce, halloumi and sweet chilli mayo on a white bun, and Young St Supper Club’s ‘Point Break’, which includes a ground beef patty, lemon pepper calamari, dill pickles, double cheese, pico de gallo, shredded iceberg lettuce, signature fries and saltwater pickle aioli on a seedless, chargrilled brioche bun.

Possibly the most unusual looking is the ‘Maple Jack’ from Burger Days, which has a beef patty, maple bacon, tomato chutney, cheddar Jack cheese, red onion jam and confit egg yolk on a black bun.

The competition has already caught the attention of Frankston’s very own professional eater Riley ‘Chompamatic’ Murphy.

The eating machine, who recently put down the knife and fork to compete in the current series of Australian Ninja Warrior, said he was looking forward to tasting the creations.

“It’s a huge commitment to get around and eat every burger across Frankston City during Burger Off, but if anyone can do it — it’s me,” Chompamatic said.

“I’ve had a sneak peek at some of the Burger Off creations and I can’t wait to get my mouth around them.”
