A male passenger has died and a driver is under police guard in hospital after a horror head-on crash in Red Hill.
Detectives believe a Toyota Yaris and Toyota LandCruiser were travelling in opposite directions on Arthurs Seat Rd when the collision happened about 5pm Tuesday.
The male passenger of the Yaris, believed to be in his early 20s, died at the scene.
The 23-year-old male driver of the same car was flown to hospital in a serious condition and is under police guard.
The 44-year-old male driver and only occupant of the LandCruiser was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Detectives from the major collision investigation unit are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
There have now been 274 lives lost on Victorian roads this year, up from 229 at the same time last year.
