A young girl was assaulted as she walked down a Mooroolbark street after school last Friday.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said police have been told a man spoke to a child on Blackburn Rd about 3.40pm on December 1.
Police understand the man grabbed the child’s arm briefly before letting go.
The child was not injured during the incident.
A post shared to the Mooroolbark Community Facebook page last Friday, which has since been deleted, shared a message from a local primary school principal which described the incident as an attempted abduction.
But the Education Department has confirmed the school has now been informed that the incident was not an abduction attempt and is providing support to the student.
A Department of Education spokesperson said inquiries on the matter should be directed to police, who are investigating.
