Two men have suffered serious injuries after two cars collided in Yarra Glen, with the impact of the crash causing one car to roll and end up in swamp water.

Healesville-Yarra Glen Rd was closed between Armstrong Rd and the Yarra Glen Bypass after the crash about 11am Wednesday.

Police believe the cars collided on Healesville-Yarra Glen Rd just after 11am, causing one vehicle to roll over and end up in nearby swamp water.

The two male drivers, and sole occupants of the vehicles, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Lilydale State Emergency Service said crews worked with local towing operators to secure one vehicle which was on it side in water, placing the occupant at some risk if it moved.

“Both drivers required extensive rescues to extricate them,” the SES posted on Facebook.

One driver was flown to hospital by ambulance and the other was taken by road ambulance.

The Victoria State Emergency Service posted: “With one of the vehicles capsized in a nearby creek, the VICSES volunteers floated the vehicle to perform a mechanical extrication and get the patient to safety.

“The water was an extra challenge for the volunteers, who cut away the driver’s door, rear door, and b-pillar to remove the dashboard, and allow paramedics to take their patient to a waiting air ambulance.

“A separate crew worked to free the occupant of the second vehicle, whose car had come to a stop 200 metres up the road.”

The exact cause of the collision is being investigated.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics were called to an incident in Yarra Glen about 11.10am.

The incident was listed as a rescue road trap fire on the VicEmergency app, with six vehicles responding.
