Dandenong’s pop-up park was supposed to be temporary but it has become so popular it will soon be a permanent fixture.

The park in Foster Street opened in May, 2011 opposite the Dandenong Station and was an instant hit with locals, groups and commuters sneaking in a ball game before catching a train.

It was recently closed because of problems with the playing court surface, but instead of being repaired it will be moved and get an upgrade.

Labor member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams said the park would be put in a vacant site on the corner of Cadle and George Streets, Dandenong with a new multipurpose court built by the end of the year.

“It’s become such a popular local facility we just couldn’t let it close,” Ms Williams said.

The State Government was funding the new park for Dandenong’s futsal players, basketballers and netballers with facilities designed by landscape architects Playce following consultation with the community, she said.

Greater Dandenong Council will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the new park.

Ms Williams said the government’s Development Victoria would build the park as part of the long-term, $290 million “revitalising central Dandenong” initiative started by the Labor Government in 2006.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Councillor Youhorn Chea said the council had welcomed the recent announcement by the Victorian Government to commit to a permanent park in the revitalisation precinct of central Dandenong.

“The new location will benefit both local residents and businesses and will also be accessible to the broader community,” Cr Chea said.
