YOU won’t believe what two ice-addled brothers who went on a Ned Kelly-style crime spree across the Mornington Peninsula accused police of doing to them.

The pair, who were living in a homemade bush camp in Dromana, were eventually caught, two days after the police pursuit, hiding in a squatter’s roof cavity in Frankston.

But the bungling brothers claim they now suffer PTSD because police shot at them during the pursuit.

Jack Hanley, 26 and James Hanley, 23, pleaded guilty to more than 100 combined charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard the drugged-up duo were involved in carjackings, pursuits, burglaries, thefts, deceptions, arson and handling crimes, sometimes together and sometimes with other criminals, during February and March this year.

James had only been out of prison for a few days after being sentenced to jail for similar offences last year.

The court heard they stole cars, were either involved in a raft of burglaries or received the goods from them, and committed a large range of credit card deceptions.

The court heard in one spectacular heist on February 25 this year, unknown offenders stole $98,000 worth of motorbikes, trailers and tools from a Cape Schanck property.

The next day the bungling brothers returned to pick up a nicked Harley Davidson that had been hidden in bushland next door, only to be spooked and run away, leaving behind a RSL receipt with one of their names on it.

To fuel their raging drug habits they stole cars, keys and wallets from houses and vehicles in Dromana, Rye, Mt Martha, Blairgowrie, Mornington and Flinders, often taking numberplates to try and hide their identity.

But their crime spree unravelled on March 2 after an unmarked police patrol saw them in two stolen utes in Dromana, and gave chase.

They managed to get away, but were seen later that afternoon in one of them on Frankston-Flinders Rd and another hunt ensued.

After being tracked through Red Hill and Dromana, they drove the ute through fire tracks before being trapped.

They then drove at police, “swerving and sliding” towards them, forcing officers to jump out of the way.

A police member saw the passenger wave what he believed was a rifle out the window and the cop shot at them, before they sped off.

Two days after they were found at a Frankston house hiding in the roof cavity, arrested and remanded.

Both had gunshot wounds to their legs.

Their defence lawyer said both “boys” had committed the “crime wave” to feed their raging drug addictions and now had PTSD due to the shooting.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said they faced lengthy jail terms for their “serious, persistent, and lawless course of conduct”.

The are expected to be sentenced later this week.

Nearly $60,000 worth of stolen goods has still not been recovered.
