‘Original Gangster’ blames cop dad, murdered mate for drug-fuelled crime spree

A self-proclaimed “original gangster” with a 40-page rap sheet has blamed his latest crimes on a drug spiral due to the stabbing murder of his best mate and strained relationship with his police officer father.

A 26-year-old with a 40-page rap sheet, who describes himself online as “an original gangster”, is again behind bars after another series of law-breaking antics.

Jake Carter blamed his latest offending on a drug spiral due to the stabbing murder of his best mate and stresses from the fact his father is a police officer.

He appeared at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court via video link yesterday and pleaded guilty to a series of court order breaches and a drug possession charge.

Carter has priors dating back to when he was 19 involving crimes including stalking, drugs, assaults and bail and court order fails.

The court heard he disobeyed two intervention orders against two different women in the space of four months.

In March this year he rang and messaged his former partner more than 100 times as well as setting up Facebook accounts trying to befriend her.

In December 2019 he had twice contacted another woman, who also had an intervention order against him, via Facebook messages.

He was caught in a car with a small bag of cannabis on April 4 this year and, as he was on two sets of bail at the time, was arrested and remanded.

His defence lawyer told the court Carter had little memory of the court order breaches, but was sorry and remorseful for the impact the contacts had on the women.

He said the murder of Carter’s best friend last year had caused him PTSD, and his strained relationship with his police officer father was also a factor in his offending.

He said he had struggled since the age of 15 with drugs, starting with cannabis and going on to ice, and would benefit from a treatment-based community corrections order.

But magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Carter had failed every court order he has ever been given – and was basically “a non-compliant individual”.

“There have been a lot of attempts to engage him, he’s made a nonsense of them,” Mr Vandersteen said.

“The CCO framework has not been able to hold him; he’s had suspended sentences, corrections orders, he has exhausted all his options.

“He exhibits controlling behaviour, he has mental health issues and his ongoing drug use makes things problematic for him.”

Carter was jailed for 120 days, minus 53 days he has already served on remand.
