National Milkshake Day: The freakiest drinks shaking up Melbourne suburbs
THICK or thin, basic or loaded with sugary bling, milkshake mania is gripping Melbourne, so in honour of National Milkshake Day we’ve rounded up some of the best.

THE humble shake shot to the top of the drinks list in 2015 off the back of some over the top creations by inner city early adaptors — Johnny Pump cafe in Essendon and Naughty Boy cafe in Princes Hill.
Fast forward three years and any suburban cafe worth its smashed avo has a version of the milkshake on the chalk board.

But not all shakes are worth queuing for.
With some dedicated taste testing and a little help from the team behind the Shakes of Melbourne Facebook page, we’ve come up with a handful of shakes near you to try in honour of National Milkshake Day.

PS: The average dessert shake has about 1500 calories. But don’t stress — you can make up for today’s sugar rush by celebrating National Carrot Day on Wednesday.
26 Wells St, Frankston
The Cake Cottage Milk Bar has a super sweet range of shakes including the Jam Slam, Cookie Crunch and Lemon Buzz. But it’s the limited edition drink created by owner Sally Quill in honour of her idol Pink that people are lining up for. Her Get The Party Started hot pink and silver shake is topped with fairy floss and a New York cheesecake filled doughnut draped with a candy necklace. Shakes are served until 4.30pm on weekdays and 3.30pm on weekends.
Hampton Park Shopping Centre, Shop 1A, 55 Hallam Rd, Hampton
The milkshakes are so popular at Sugar Buns Bakery Cafe the owner had to install bollards out the front to keep the crowds under control. Steven Richard said queues of up to 300 people were common and he had scaled back on social media for the business. One slurp of the Candylane shake is all it takes to make any wait worthwhile. Shakes are served Monday to Saturday 7am-5pm and Sunday 8am-5pm.
Shop 8/27/29 Nepean Hwy, Mentone
Loaded with fairy floss, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn and lolly pops, these decadent drinks are luring curious customers to Mentone’s newest cafe. Crazy shake fan Evan Li opened the cafe in a warehouse earlier this year and said the highly grammable drinks were the best ad he could ask for. Sweet Espresso is open daily from 8.30am-4.30pm.
371 Lonsdale St, Dandenong
Butlers Smokehouse has the honour of making the thickest shakes in the south. The burger joint opened in January this year and has quickly made a name for itself with ultra thick and tasty shakes. Flavours include salted caramel popcorn, cookies and cream and berrylicious cheesecake. Butlers Smokehouse is open daily from noon til midnight.
97 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn
Three of the best shakes in town can be found at Hawthorn’s Muharam Cafe. The signature shake is a masterpiece topped with a Nutella filled doughnut. It has a snappy name too — Nut Tellin’. The only down side is that Muharam takes Monday’s off, so you won’t be able to celebrate National Milkshake Day there this year. Shakes are available Tuesday to Friday, 7.45am-3.30pm and weekends from 8am-3.30pm.
257a Bluff Rd, Sandringham
Foe a decadent mega shake with a whole lot of pizzazz, head to The Bluff, Patrons ranging in age from three to 85 come from far and wide to try The Bluff’s Oreo, salted caramel and strawberry freakshakes with specially-made gelati. There are also seasonal shakes at Easter and during school holidays. The Bluff is open Tuesday to Thursday 8.30am-5pm, Friday 8.30am-6pm and weekends 9am-3pm.
55 Beach St, Port Melbourne
Enjoy a freakshake of epic proportions at Cafe Lafayette. Their bestseller is the crownie and double chocolate shake with Nutella, candied popcorn, pretzels, cream and chocolate walnut brownie. The also do sea salt cream cheese shakes. Cafe Lafayeete is open Monday to Friday 7.30am-3.30pm and weekends 8am-4pm.
129 Church St, Brighton
Brighton Soul offer a Nutella freakshake made with loads of ice-cream, whipped cream, fairy floss and Oreos. The blue unicorn shake is a real talking point — it comes with a doughnut and fairy floss. “We try our best,” owner Roland Aigars said. Shakes are available from everyday from 7am-6pm.
746 North Rd, Ormond
Exquisitely presented freakshakes await you here. “We usually use one of our homemade cakes as the base and then pretty it up,” owner Julie Godfrey said. Soy and lactose-free options are also available. The Ormond Provedore Cafe is open Monday to Friday 6am-4pm and weekends 7.30am-4pm.
