Myer Southland shoplifter’s desperate dash caught on camera after taking Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas clothes

A Southland shoplifter is being hunted by investigators after he was caught on CCTV dodging Myer security and making a dash to the car park after stealing a stash of clothes. And the hit follows revelations of the centre’s alarming shoplifting history.

A sprinting shoplifter has been caught on camera making a desperate dash from staff at Southland Shopping Centre.

And investigators are stepping up their search for the thread-loving thief, who was snapped on CCTV running from Myer employees with a stash of shirts on July 19.

The footage shows the man, who is of caucasian appearance, about 175cm and aged in his 40s, casually strolling around the store and picking up his favourite items before making his way to the exit about 4pm.

But when a person on the door put their arm out in a bid to stop him, the man took off and made a getaway into the third level carpark.

“He was seen on CCTV getting into a silver Subaru station wagon which was parked on the third level outside Myer and exited towards Bay St,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

“The vehicle was bearing stolen number plates, 1NZ-6CE which had been stolen from a vehicle in Omars Place, Narre Warren South, sometime between July 8 and July 9.

“The registration plates are still outstanding.”

The man was wearing black tracksuit pants with the Stussy motif on the front left leg, a two toned high-vis windcheater and a baseball cap with Brooklyn motif.

However, he could be seen in his new threads which include a Tommy Hilfiger grey windcheater and navy pants, an Adidas navy top, SuperDry green pants and a KSCY windcheater.

“Police have released images and CCTV of a man they believe may be able to assist with their investigation along with an image of the vehicle the man was seen leaving in with the false registration plates attached,” the spokesman said.

The incident follows fresh figures which revealed more than 14 crimes a day were committed at Melbourne shopping centres last year, two of which were deemed violent in nature.

There were more than 560 crimes recorded at Southland, including 461 property and deception offences as well as 59 crimes against the person.

Fountain Gate Narre Warren was the worst-hit centre, recording 711 property deception offences and 91 crimes against the person.
