Music helped teenager Sage Marie survive lockdown, now her passion is blossoming into a career

A budding Cranbourne musician has her sights set on the world stage after using music to ease her mental health during lockdowns.

At just 17, a young singer from Melbourne’s south east is looking to take the world by storm.

Writing, recording and producing her own songs from her bedroom in Cranbourne, Sage Marie’s music has been played on the radio not just in Australia, but across the world — from Finland to England to Japan.

Sage said her inspiration to write and release her music came during one of Melbourne’s many lockdowns.

“I was really struggling with my anxiety,” she said.

“It was a way to ease my own mental strain and I wanted to release my music in case it spoke to anyone else feeling the same way.”

Sage has always loved music and has been taking lessons since she was 11.

“It’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to pursue,” Sage said.

“I’ve had moments where I’ve thought I might do something else in the future, but I always come back to music somehow.”

Sage’s accolades are building rapidly, from winning school talent shows and radio competitions to being invited to appear and play at a ukulele festival next year.

“I didn’t think it would take off this quickly, but I’m glad it has,” she said.

“I just love sharing my music with others.”

As for nerves, Sage said she still gets jittery sometimes.

“Oh, I for sure feel anxious at times, especially when I’m about to perform,” she said.

“It’s so different going from being in your room and not having the pressure to do everything perfectly the first time.”

Throughout the numerous lockdowns Melbourne endured over 2020 and 2021, Sage was busy at work, teaching herself how to record and produce her own songs in order to release them online, all while balancing her first year of VCE.

“I was pretty lucky, Mum helped me get all the equipment I needed to record everything,” Sage said.

“From there, I just have been teaching myself how to balance sound and the instruments on one track, so that everything sounds nice together.”

Sage has released her music to Triple J’s Unearthed and uploaded tracks to Spotify, but she has bigger dreams ahead of her.

“My dream collaboration would be to perform or make music with Ed Sheeran,” she said.

“But for now, I’m just happy making my own music.”
