Treasured family dog Oreo killed in vicious attack from next door neighbour’s greyhounds

A council has deemed one of two greyhounds involved in a brutal attack on a beloved family dog in Cranbourne West “not a risk’’.

Family pet fatally mauled in it’s own backyard

A council in Melbourne’s southeast has returned home one of two dogs involved in the fatal mauling of a cherished family pet, less than a week after the brutal attack.

In a move that has dismayed Elysha Huby and her children, Casey Council has released one of the dogs involved in the violent backyard attack that led to the death of their three-year-old spitz Oreo.

“I don’t understand how they can say it was only one of the dogs,” Ms Huby told Leader.

“You can clearly see in the footage that both of them were attacking Oreo.”

In a statement released to Leader, the council’s manager of safer communities, Daniel Osborne, said that after analysing the CCTV footage, that the second greyhound “was identified to not be a risk to the community”.

“Both greyhounds were registered and had no adverse history with the council,” Mr Osbourne said.

“As both dogs have never raced, muzzle restrictions did not apply to them.”

Mr Osborne also said the owners of the greyhounds were co-operating with investigating officers.

Despite this, Mr Osborne said that Oreo’s death was still under investigation.

“Council officers will review all of the evidence in the coming days to establish what charges are to be made against the owner of the attacking dog.”

CCTV footage shows both greyhounds forcing their way into Ms Huby’s backyard over a 15 minute period, before attacking Oreo and subsequently killing him in a vicious rampage that lasted 30 minutes.

The council seized the two offending dogs, before releasing the second one back to its owner just days later; a move that Ms Huby said has traumatised her and her children all over again.

“Even if I would let them into the backyard, they don’t want to go out there,” Ms Huby told Leader.

“Seeing his last resting spot is traumatising enough, now they have to hear the other dog next door alive and well. It’s not fair.”
