A MOTORCYCLIST high on prescription pills went on a bizarre 90-minute crime spree including stealing steaks, nicking lip balm and sitting in a stranger’s car.

The disability support pensioner — who fractured his vertebrae in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago — was taking Xanax when he committed the crimes earlier this year.

Craig Rowbottom pleaded guilty to theft and driving charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on July 23.

The court heard the Endeavour Hills 57-year-old was seen by police at 4.30pm on February 28 riding a motorbike around Lakeside Boulevard in Pakenham.

He was pulled over and found to have stolen plates on the bike, which had ran out of rego the year before.

He was also unlicensed at the time.

At 5.55pm Rowbottom walked into the nearby supermarket and took seven chocolate bars, some eye fillets and other items valued at $92 before walking out.

He then broke into a parked Mazda SUV and rummaged through the vehicle, stealing two necklaces, a cigarette lighter and some lip balm from the glove box.

He was sat in the driver’s seat when the car’s owner came out and saw him; he walked away but didn’t get very far before police arrested him.

He told officers he had “bought” the items from the supermarket, even though he had no means to pay on him.

He said the Mazda belonged to a good friend of his and he had permission to be sat in it. It wasn’t, and he didn’t.

He said he knew he was unlicensed, but had borrowed the motorbike from a friend and didn’t know it was not registered.

Rowbottom’s defence lawyer told the court he had a bad bike accident in 2003 and had been taking medication to deal with that.

He said “he didn’t have a strong recollection” of what had happened that day.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer told him he “needs to keep his nose clean” or he could end up in jail.

He was fined $1000 and convicted, and must also submit a DNA sample to police.
