Mornington Peninsula farmers take green wedge protection campaign to state parliament

MORNINGTON PENINSULA farmers will take a serious message to state parliament when the drop by on August 7.

PENINSULA farmers will deliver more than just some tasty produce when they drop by parliament on August 7.

They will be sending a message to politicians about protecting agricultural land as part of a Mornington Peninsula Shire campaign to highlight its importance of the green wedge.

Boneo farmer Richard Hawkes, who runs a 56ha family property, said it was essential politicians sat up and took notice.

“It’s an opportunity to highlight the importance of agriculture and green wedge protection,” he said.

“If it’s not protected it will get chewed up for housing or hobby farms. It’s very important. It’s our livelihood.”

Mayor Bryan Payne said the ‘Taste of Mornington Peninsula’ campaign would highlight the importance of protecting the Peninsula’s green wedge because of the integral part it plays in Victoria’s agricultural and tourism industry.

“Over 7 million visitors annually come to the Peninsula to experience wine and food from 500 registered venues,” he said.

“Tourism and hospitality is one of the region’s largest employers, employing over 4400 people in full time, part time and casual positions.”

State Planning Minister Richard Wynne said green wedges were critical to the liveability of communities and the government was protecting them for future generations.

“We’re ensuring Victoria’s vital foodbowl areas are receiving the support and infrastructure they need to thrive and support our growing state, including in the Peninsula,” he said.

Nepean Liberal candidate Russell Joseph said the Coalition would prioritise “protecting our agricultural and environmentally unique hinterland from overdevelopment”.

The farmers will drop into parliament on August 7.
