Mordialloc Freeway: Exclusive look at work and bridge sites for $523m Frankston-Clayton link

Construction of the Mordialloc Freeway has been going on in leaps and bounds, with COVID-19 proving no barrier as the first of six bridges is built along the route. And new drone footage shows just how big the project is.

Twin roads are set to rise over wetlands in Melbourne’s southeast as tradies make progress on the first bridge for the Mordialloc Freeway.

And hundreds of trucks have hauled a whopping 1.7 million tonnes of crushed rock to form the road base for the 9km, $523 million link from Clayton to Frankston.

Exclusive drone footage obtained by the Leader from Major Road Projects Victoria shows 900 sqm of reinforced concrete earth walls piecing together near Centre Dandenong and Lower Dandenong roads at Dingley Village, where 65 per cent of the road base has been delivered and will settle over the next six months.

The incredible images also show the raised earth near Park Way, Braeside Park and Lower Dandenong Rd, which is the future site for a pedestrian underpass.

Almost 300 employees have worked more than 400,000 hours to install around 5km of swales and drainage, as well as driving more than 200 piles into the ground to help support the road at the former Grange Rd landfill site in Dingley Village.

A temporary working platform has also been built at Waterways to allow crews to start piling and utility works for the first of a total of six bridges along the route.

The five remaining bridges will rise above Governor Rd, Lower Dandenong Rd, Centre Dandenong Rd, Old Dandenong Rd and Springvale Rd.

“The Mordialloc Freeway is really taking shape now, with work starting on the first of six bridges, the twin bridges over the wetlands at Waterways,” Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson said.

Proponents say the freeway will remove 13,000 trucks from clogged up local roads between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and the Dingley Bypass.

There will be one set of traffic lights connecting the freeway to Dingley Bypass at the road’s only intersection.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the completed project, due late next year, would help remove congestion across Melbourne’s southeast.

“(We’re) seeing great progress on the entire length of the Mordialloc Freeway, which is yet another example of how we’re working hard to remove congestion across Melbourne’s booming southeastern suburbs,” she said.
