Chelsea road danger: Mum fears pedestrian will die if busy ‘blind spot’ isn’t fixed

A fearful Chelsea mother says a dangerous bend in the road could lead to a pedestrian being killed, after witnessing multiple near-misses as people take their chances walking across the risky “blind spot”.

A Chelsea mother fears a pedestrian could be seriously injured or killed if nothing is done to fix a notorious “blind spot” near the suburb’s shopping strip.

And the plea comes after Alison, who did not want to supply her surname, witnessed two elderly residents who were nearly collected by roaring traffic as they tried to cross Swansea Rd near a “blind” bend on Bath St.

Alison told the Leader the elderly couple was just one of multiple near-misses she witnessed each week as shoppers and beachgoers attempted to cross the busy street.

She urged Kingston Council to reconfigure the road’s design and install a pedestrian crossing.

“The elderly couple looked before crossing, however the car was in this blind spot … they stepped out and thankfully the driver slammed on the brakes and missed them,” she said.

“They were very shaken and said (despite) living in the area for 30 years (they decided to) rarely walk now due to all the traffic for Woolies and how dangerous it is.

“How many times do I need to witness an almost fatal pedestrian incident at this intersection?”

Alison said that despite council gardeners pruning the trees along Bath St six months ago, plants were “not in the line of visibility” and she demanded the road bend be “redesigned”.

“There is a huge number of visitors to Chelsea daily … enough is enough,” she said.

Council city assets and environment general manager Samantha Krull said officers inspected the site on Thursday and confirmed they would investigate potential traffic changes to improve safety.

“Council officers … noted the existing vegetation is not causing any line of sight issues where the road has a bend,” she said.

“Officers will further investigate potential traffic treatments that might improve safety for

pedestrians in the area.”
