A monkey bike has been impounded and its rider hit with a $1250 bill as police crack down on young hoons.

Rosebud Police took action on Wednesday after complaints about a monkey bike rider allegedly hooning around Safety Beach.

The bike was located and intercepted by police who then impounded the vehicle.

The driver is expected to be charged with a range of traffic offences including unlicensed riding, use of an unregistered vehicle and failing to wear a helmet.

He will appear before the Children’s Court at a later date.

Police warned of a zero tolerance approach to illegal use of monkey bikes and urged community members to continue to report any riders doing the wrong thing.

“Once again, we cannot be more clear: These bikes are dangerous, and neither the police nor the local community will tolerate them putting people at risk,” a police spokesman said.

“If you choose to ride one of these bikes at the risk of yourself and others, when you are located – and you will be located – you can expect to have the bike impounded and to face a Magistrate for your actions, regardless of age or excuse.”

The dangers posed by irresponsible mini-motor bike riders was illustrated when Carrum Downs mother Andrea Lehane died after being struck on a pedestrian crossing in September 2015.

Mornington Peninsula police have the power to seize bike for the council to destroy.

Owners can apply and pay to have the bikes returned.

Anyone wishing to report monkey bike hoons should contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
