A 42-year-old Dandenong North man turned himself in to officers when he was startled by a police car after he was looking suspiciously at a push bike.

Michael Bogovic was sentenced at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to charges involving possessing a prohibited weapon, handle or receive stolen goods, possessing an imitation firearm and failing to answer to bail.

Bogovic was intercepted as he was riding his mountain bike on Oakwood Ave in Dandenong North in March 2021.

He had a silver knife concealed in his waistband and was carrying a Beretta imitation handgun — which he said he found in hard rubbish just before he was caught.

He told police he wanted to pull the gun apart to look at the parts, and was carrying the knife for protection.

A month later, he was found with a meat cleaver and a “cat ear” ring in Noble Park.

When he was interviewed he told investigators it was “to cut something”.

Bogovic was seen rummaging through items out the front of MS Community Shop in Glen Waverley in May this year before police found him and arrested him, on outstanding warrants.

He made a mostly no comment interview with partial admissions.

Bogovic was at a property in Dandenong on September 8 this year looking at a pushbike in the driveway.

Police were called to the location after reports of a man who was acting suspiciously, wearing black gloves and a backpack at the address.

At the time, Bogovic had outstanding warrants for his arrest and had a history of criminal activity dating back to 1999.

He saw the police car and seemed shocked, before he walked up to the officers and admitted he had warrants.

The officers confirmed he had outstanding warrants and arrested Bogovic.

He told police he was picking up his bike from his friend’s house, but police couldn’t get a hold of the occupant to confirm the story.

Bogovic appeared via video link from custody on Monday and represented himself.

He told Magistrate Costas Kilias he just wanted to “get this over and done with and start fresh”.

Mr Kilias sentenced him to four months in jail, with 33 days reckoned as already served — meaning Bogovic will be released in about two months.

He was also convicted and fined $400.
