A Melbourne council is asking for feedback from LGBTIQA+ people on its draft action plan which aims to make the community safer, more inclusive and welcoming.
Monash Council’s inaugural draft LGBTIQA+ Action Plan sets out four key priorities — of celebrating diversity, enhancing safety and participation, creating an inclusive community as well as building equitable services and facilities.
One hundred and fifty community representatives from a range of ages, cultural background, abilities, sexual orientation and gender identities took part in the consultation as part of the first stage of the draft.
“I’m starting to feel more valued as a queer resident of Monash after many years of feeling less visible,” one resident said.
The council is now seeking further feedback on whether the plan adequately captures the community’s visions and ideas for improving everyone in Monash.
“As with everyone in our community, the LGBTIQA+ community deserves to have full and equal participation in community life, and we want to ensure this Plan reflects and elevates their voices and builds upon our ongoing commitment to inclusivity,” Mayor Stuart James said.
The consultation process is open until Sunday, October 23 before a final version will be presented for endorsement later this year.
