A man who installed security measures at prominent locations in Melbourne such as Parliament House and Federation Square was busy growing cannabis in his own home.

Peter Webber, from Rowville, appeared in the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to one charge of cultivating cannabis.

The court heard Webber, who was in remission for stage four cancer where he had a 10 per cent chance of survival, cultivated large amounts of cannabis to help with his pain management.

When police carried out a search warrant at his home in May this year they found multiple Tupperware containers full of cannabis, as well as three plants.

The total amount was in excess of 3.5kg.

Police also found six cans of pepper spray in Webber’s house.

The court heard Webber told police it was for personal use and he used about 3-4g of the drug a day.

Daniella Markotich for Webber told the court her client had been involved in an act of bravery where he saved people from a burning boat and he should avoid a conviction as his business worked installing security bollards outside police stations.

Webber owns Melbourne Ram Raid Security and Ms Markotich said he was “dedicated to his work”.

However, Magistrate John Doherty wasn’t on board with recording no conviction.

“Why would I not convict him?” he said.

“He has been to prison in the past. He has priors for drug matters. Some people cultivate drugs and go to prison.

“He has taken a risk and got caught.”

Mr Doherty convicted and fined Webber $2500.
