Matthew Munn: Carrum painter jailed for preying on teens on KIK

A Carrum painter has denied being sexually attracted to underage girls despite having been caught repeatedly preying on young teens.

A Carrum father who was previously jailed for having sex with a 14-year-old girl has been thrown back behind bars after returning to his predatory ways.

Matthew Munn, 35, was sentenced to a minimum of four years’ jail before the County Court on Tuesday, having pleaded guilty to two charges of using a carriage service to procure a person believed to be under 16.

The painter took to social media and sought out 14-year-old girls, who he tried to meet for sex, less than four years after he was jailed for assaulting one who he’d groomed on Snapchat.

Munn, a registered sex offender for life, approached who he thought was a 14-year-old girl called ‘Lucy’ — actually an undercover cop — on KIK on July 20, 2020.

He used a profile picture of a woman when he began chatting to ‘Lucy’, then claimed a woman had been using his phone.

Munn told ‘Lucy’ she was cute, then suggested she come for a vacation at the beach, saying “I wanna hook up with you”.

The sex offender then asked her to send him explicit photos of herself in return for a photo of his genitalia.

“I don’t mind sending u a pic of my d*ck on here if u want 1,” he said before sending a video of him touching himself under his clothing.

He asked ‘Lucy’ for explicit photos then escalated to asking her to meet.

On September 25 he texted her “Im getting in shower wish u were here”.

He then suggested meeting up with her to “hook up”, saying, “you make me really horny”.

Hours later he reneged, saying, “I don’t want to get in trouble … Im too old for you!”

But on October 5 he suggested they exchange nude photos before meeting and texted her explicit messages about sexual acts he wanted to perform on her.

The pair organised to meet on October 9 before Munn again pulled out, telling her, “I can’t be doing this with u!! I have something wrong with me to want to do this”.

Munn had reached out to another KIK user he thought was a 14-year-old girl called ‘Isy’, who was also an undercover cop, on June 13, 2020.

He offered ‘Isy’ explicit photos of himself and asking for naughty pictures of her.

Munn told her he would take her for a drive, saying, “I want u soo bad”.

Munn was arrested on October 14.

The court heard he had been granted parole after he was jailed in August 2016 for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old.

It was heard he had begun dating his fiance shortly after he was arrested over that matter — but before his jail sentence — and was still with her.

Judge Tinney noted Munn had “pretended to be single”.

The court heard Munn had family support, and had become a father while in custody, which Judge Tinney deemed, “more than a bit sad”.

Judge Tinney said Munn seemed to lack remorse for the crimes, which may have been explained by his clear lack of insight.

It was heard Munn had denied that he had any sexual attraction to underage girls.

“There was something wrong with you for you to want to do this with a 14-year-old,” Judge Tinney said.

“You had a home, a partner, a child on the way, and still you offended.”

Judge Tinney noted Munn had been given extensive sex offender treatment before the latest crimes, making his risk of offending again “very real”.

Munn was sentenced to a maximum of six years’ jail, having already served 286 days.
