An aggressive man who viciously attacked a random woman at a motel blamed his offending on his mohawk-wearing alter ego.
Dult Abela, 21, pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday to charges including aggravated burglary, unlawful assault, intentionally damaging property and recklessly causing injury.
The court heard Abela left his room at the Dandenong Motel and ran across the carpark about 12.50am on October 22, 2021.
He launched himself into the air and slammed his shoulder into a door, causing it to break.
Abela fell into a random room and climbed onto a bed where a woman was sleeping.
Abela punched her in the head, chest and hands multiple times as the woman screamed for help.
After about 15 seconds, Abela stopped and ran from the room.
Later on, a police officer tried to arrest Abela but he broke free.
Abela was subsequently capsicum sprayed as he acted aggressively towards the police.
In a police interview, the man originally said his name was Dult but later said it was Duke.
He said Dult “was not physically or mentally him” and he tried to stop Dult from assaulting the woman.
Abela described Dult as a man with a mohawk which Abela did not have.
The court also heard Abela punched his housemate in the face four to six times when they shared a property in Clayton.
Abela’s lawyer Sachin Sagaran said the man was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Mr Sagaran also said Abela’s mental health declined when he discovered his brother’s body who died of suicide.
“It was very difficult for him,” he said.
The man was remanded in custody and will appear back in court on December 20.
