A Cranbourne man, who became a father at 14, has been jailed after he sexually assaulted a young girl while drunk.

Angus Hazledine, 25, was sentenced at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges including sexual assault by touching a child under 16, possessing a prohibited weapon, trespassing and theft.

The court heard Hazledine was at a house when the victim came into the room and sat near him on September 2019.

The girl was in the room for about three to five minutes before Hazledine sexually assaulted her.

The girl felt uncomfortable and made an attempt to get up but Hazledine picked her up brought her back.

The girl tried again to leave but Hazledine stopped her.

In a third attempt to leave, the man allowed her to leave.

In a police interview, Hazledine said he didn’t have a thought process while he assaulted the victim but it made him “feel like a sicko” after it happened.

After the victim left the room, Hazledine thought “What the f*** did I just do, what the f*** did you just do Angus, you sick f***”.

Hazledine told police he was intoxicated as he had been drinking throughout the day.

The court also heard Hazledine trespassed on Cranbourne Secondary College, was caught with knuckle dusters and stole power tools in 2020 and 2021.

Hazledine’s lawyer Julia McGrath said the man led a life that was “founded on trauma” and “plagued by dysfunction”.

Ms McGrath said Hazledine became a father at just 14 and was ostracised from his community in Cranbourne.

“It’s a dysfunctional community,” she said.

“It’s a particularly tight community where everybody knows everybody.”

Ms McGrath said the man had a personality disorder and used cannabis, methamphetamine and heroin.

Hazledine was sentenced to 392 days in prison with 348 days in custody already served and a community corrections order for a period of 18 months.

He will be a registered sex offender for life.
