WITH five days to go until the end of 2016, Victoria’s horror year on the roads is set to be the worst in five years after yet another fatality.
Tragically, 284 people have died as a result of road trauma this year, eclipsing the five-year average of 256 lives lost on the roads.
The figure is a 14.5 per cent increase on 2015’s road toll of 248 this time last year.
It comes as Victoria’s horror start to the holiday season continues with a man’s death in Melbourne’s southeast — the third road fatal since Christmas Day.
The driver lost control of his vehicle in Melbourne’s southeast, crashing into a tree on Tyabb-Tooradin Rd in Somerville just after 5.30am on Tuesday morning.
The man died at the scene, while two other male passengers have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The men are yet to be formally identified.
Two other men have been killed on the roads since Christmas morning, with a man aged in his 20s dying after colliding with a petrol tanker in Geelong on Boxing Day.
Another died in a Christmas Day tragedy after crashing into the front yard of a house in Clunes.
Police are investigating all three fatal crashes and appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
