Ice dealer Scott Whitbourn jailed for six months after repeatedly being busted with drugs

This father of three used to be a hard-working mechanic. But then he began a “spiral” into ice use. Now — after being busted three times with drugs he dealt to fund his habit — he finds himself behind bars after facing a Dandenong court.

A junkie who dealt ice to fund his habit has been jailed after he was busted with bags of drugs three times in eight months.

Scott Whitbourn pleaded guilty to more than a dozen drug charges and court order breaches at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

The court heard the 38-year-old mechanic was pulled over in June last year driving along Westernport Highway in Lyndhurst.

He was acting very suspiciously, avoiding eye contact, mumbling and appearing nervous, so police officers searched his car.

They found scales, a bag of white powder, a smoking pipe and empty deal bags.

Four months later, in October, police raided the Cranbourne East property he was at while looking for another man.

When they went inside they saw Whitbourn run into the backyard with a backpack, and try and burn it.

They managed to get hold of the bag before it was destroyed and found it had more than 14g of ice, one ecstasy pill, some cannabis, and $930 cash inside.

He told officers the drugs were “for personal use”, and the money was for “mechanical work” he had done.

But when Whitbourn’s house was raided in February this year, police again found a cash and drug stash, locating more than 3g of ice, drug pipes and $2475.

He said he dealt drugs to fund his ice habit and admitted the cash was from selling.

This time he was remanded and he has remained in custody since.

In court his defence lawyer said Whitbourn used to be a hard working mechanic until 2016, when he began his “spiral” into ice use.

Since then the father of three had “had his world turned upside down” due to drugs, but thanks to being in custody, was now able to have insight into what it had cost him.

Magistrate Sharon McRae said Whitbourn “does the same thing again, again and again.”

“It is not just his life he is wrecking, he is wrecking a whole lot of other lives in the community as well,” Ms McRae said.

Whitbourn was given six months in jail, minus the 41 days he has already served, and must do a 12-month drug counselling corrections order upon release.
