What happens in a criminal trial?

A DRUG trafficker who sold ice to an undercover detective after advertising his wares on online selling platform ‘craigslist’ has been jailed.

Wayne Cimino, 39, formerly of Berwick, pleaded guilty to a plethora of over 20 drug trafficking, possession and traffic charges at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard the plasterer became heavily addicted to ice after his life spiralled out of control.

In late 2015 his son was diagnosed with leukaemia, he lost his job and his wife left him and took the kids to Queensland.

The court heard he had previously dabbled with the drug, but due to the stresses of his life he started taking it in ever increasing quantities.

He was caught driving unlicensed and unregistered in April last year in Carrum and again in August in Sunshine, each time in possession of ice and drug paraphernalia.

But his decision to advertise ice for sale on the online site was his downfall.

Caulfield Divisional Response Unit officers got wind of his plan, and set up a sting.

In January this year undercover police twice met Cimino in the city to buy small amounts of ice, before the big take-down in February.

On Valentine’s Day, they caught up in the CBD to buy 14g of the drug, worth $3000, and after doing a deal, arrested him.

A raid of an Ivanhoe property linked to Cimino found a further stash of cash, ice, cannabis, prescription medication, ecstasy and GHB.

Defence lawyer Andrew Halphen said Cimino was selling to pay for his ice habit, which peaked at 1g per day.

“Most of the proceeds were going to the use of drugs ... he had a raging ice addition,” he said.

Cimino is now clean, has a good support network and rehabilitation prospects, he said.

Magistrate Peter Lauritsen said he accepted Cimino had remorse and a desire to not reoffend, but trafficking was a significant charge that deserved a prison sentence.

He was jailed for 120 days, minus 50 days already served, and upon release must undergo a 12-month drug treatment-based community corrections order.
